The Disney Harry Potter Land That Almost Was

As most of you already know Disney will soon be taking Star Wars beyond films and television, in the form of a Star Wars land called Galaxy’s Edge. The land dedicated to a galaxy far, far away is expected to open at both United States parks sometime next year. We also heard rumors earlier this week that the media giant has plans to make another area dedicated to a Lucasfilm property in Indiana Jones (though the project isn’t thought to be near the scale of Galaxy’s Edge).

Today we learn that the House of Mouse at one time were going to make a Harry Potter mini-land a reality. Jim Hill, who is known authority on theme parks

“This was tiny. Itty bitty. There were two attractions. Basically it was going to be Buzz Lightyear. You were going to be in an Omnimover attraction with a wand instead of a gun, and you were moving through basically a Dark Arts teaching class. The other aspect was going to be a Care of Magical Creatures Petting Zoo.”

To clarify, the Buzz Lightyear quip is in reference to a slow moving shooting attraction called Buzz Lightyear: Astroblasters, in which the character leads park goers on a mission. I will say I think the petting zoo idea has potential, it would also be a smooth way to incorporate Fantastic Beasts. Disney’s idea was surely lacking, as a universe as large as Harry Potter’s deserves much more. It sounds as if fans lucked out by the project being taken over to Universal Studios as opposed to Disney.
