Director Antoine Fuqua has made a name for himself since he burst onto the scene in 2001. His list of films includes the Oscar-winner Training Day (Best Actor Denzel Washington), Tears Of The Sun, Shooter, Olympus Has Fallen, The Equalizer, Southpaw, and The Magnificent Seven. Now, Fuqua has found his next project, and its set during an important event in Chinese history.
Fuqua is developing, producing and potentially directing an adaptation of Caleb Carr’s best-selling novel The Devil Soldier. Mark Earl Burman, producer of Dog Eat Dog, will be producing alongside Fuqua while Artist International Group CEO David Unger will serve as executive producer. Deadline explains the plot of the novel as follows:
“The Devil Soldier is a historical epic which follows the American outlaw-turned-mercenary Frederick Townsend Ward during the Taiping Rebellion. The book has sold millions of copies and has been likened by critics, as an American version of Lawrence of Arabia, set in 19th century China. Carr’s bestseller The Alienist was turned into a hit limited series for TNT.”

Fuqua is fresh off the success of The Equalizer 2. This past summer, the Denzel Washington-starred vehicle raked in over $190 million worldwide at the box office. Since then, Fuqua has been tied to a number of potential projects, including a possible Marvel film and his name in the hat for the Scarface remake. Neither would be in the way of the development of The Devil Soldier unless he were to take on the role of director.
