The God of High School – Episode 1 Review & Round Table Discussion

Hello, everyone! Crunchyroll’s original anime series The God of High School officially debuted this past Monday with its first episode. While there is not much to discuss from the first episode, Steve and I will dive into what this show is about, what we liked from the first episode, and what we look forward to seeing from this WEBTOON comic turned anime.

Synopsis

Anyone familiar with anime, especially the fighter genre, knows how often a “tournament arc” is used to introduce new characters and give them a reason to fight with the protagonist(s). Not to mention it is a great way to build suspense for two characters who will inevitably have the most entertaining fight near the end of the tournament. Well, if you enjoy tournament arcs, it appears The God of High School is an anime built around this concept. One giant tournament to decide who is the strongest high school student and any wish is granted to the winner… sounds like a solid premise to me. The story centers around Jin Mori, Han Daewi, and Yoo Mira who all meet for the first time before the preliminaries of The God of High School tournament.

Episode 1 – Set-Up/Stand Up

Steve’s Take

True to its title, this episode simply sets up its characters and the stage for the inevitable battles that are to come. We get a bit of background on each of the three characters. Jin Mori is established as the goofy, righteous, yet determined main protagonist that resembles many shonen anime lead characters. I enjoyed the clearly defined fighting styles each of the main characters use, especially Han Daewi’s devastating punches. Looking forward, I hope to see the show dive into the past of all of these characters as we have not learned much about them as of yet.

Stylistically, I think the anime stands out with very original animation and a great depiction of Seoul, South Korea. I hope to see the animators push the boundaries with the fights, as these tend to be the moments in anime when everyone is watching closely. Based on what I’ve seen so far, I’m confident they will not disappoint.

The music also stood in the episode, not just in their catchy ending “WIN,” but also in the score. I also hope to see the music match the high-intensity this show will bring, as any fight is not complete without some hard-hitting tunes.

Overall, I’m excited for the fights to get started. I’m also looking forward to learning more about the reason all of these characters have come to participate in this tournament. I’m willing to bet Jin Mori’s drive to fight has something to do with his grandfather… but we’ll have to wait and see.

Brendan’s Take

The first episode of The God of High School honestly left me looking for more. I felt that this was more like an episode zero rather than a full-fledged episode one. Moreover, watching the opening catches you up with the entire episode.

Having knowledge about the show coming into the episode somethings seemed off. The picture in Jin’s room with his grandfather was covered in the comics for reasons I’ll not explain due to spoilers. Not explaining the reasoning behind why anything is happening or why the characters were competing in the tournament might leave viewers uninterested.

I enjoyed the animation of the first episode with fluid animation throughout the majority of the episode. The character design of the main three characters Jin, Han, and Yu are also visually appealing. The vibrant color palette easily makes the viewer want to be engrossed in the universe around them. Though, minor issues revolve around repeating animation used for background characters in the tournament which is barely noticeable.

In a world saturated with viewing options, this was middling. I’m not sure The God of High School did enough to separate itself from the rest of the pack yet. This series will likely get better as the comic is the great source material. However, with that being said you can probably skip this first episode and watch the second without missing much.
