The Hunt Gets New Release Date And Trailer Playing Up Controversy

“The most talked about movie of the year is one that no one’s actually seen. Decide for yourself.” Give those marketing folks over at Universal a damn raise! You may remember last year that their film The Hunt was pulled from its September release date. On the heels of the string of shootings in Texas and Ohio, it was deemed inappropriate for the movie to be released.

At the time, there was plenty of discussion as to whether or not this was the right move. After all, entertainment is something many of us should be protected under the First Amendment. Some criticized Universal for caving under the pressure, and a few even wondered if the movie would be quietly released months later onto Blu-ray and Digital.

It’s now months later, and from the sound of it, Universal has no intention of releasing this thing quietly. This morning, they put out a new trailer for The Hunt that highlights the film all the controversy that surrounded it. Take a look for yourself.

And that’s not all. The movie even got a new poster that pulled some of the most extreme choice quotes from many outlets. Needless to say, they have decided to go all-out on this controversy-laden campaign.

Below is the official synopsis for The Hunt:

“Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don’t know they’ve been chosen… for a very specific purpose … The Hunt.

In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, a group of elites gathers for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt ordinary Americans for sport. But the elites’ master plan is about to be derailed because one of The Hunted, Crystal (Betty Gilpin, GLOW), knows The Hunters’ game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off, one by one, as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman (two-time Oscar® winner Hilary Swank) at the center of it all.”

So, what do you think? How do you feel about Universal flipping the proverbial bird to those who criticized this movie for simply being made? We do know for a fact that director, Craig Zobel stands behind the film wholeheartedly, saying:

“If I believed this film could incite violence, I wouldn’t have made it … Our ambition was to poke at both sides of the aisle equally. We seek to entertain and unify, not enrage and divide. It is up to the viewers to decide what their takeaway will be … I wanted to make a fun, action thriller that satirized this moment in our culture — where we jump to assume we know someone’s beliefs because of which ‘team’ we think they’re on… and then start shouting at them. This rush to judgment is one of the most relevant problems of our time.”
