The Irishman Has Been Viewed By 26 Million Members, Says Netflix

Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman was quite the gamble for Netflix. It was $140 million spent on a slow-paced, character-driven piece that had three old men at its heart. Sure, they’re living legends, but still, it wasn’t exactly the sexiest pitch in the world, and there’s a reason why it eventually ended up on Netflix. But would this prestige pic be a gamble that worked out financially for the streamer? Well, that’s a complex question.

At the end of the day, Netflix retains all of its metrics, including how it values each view and subscription addition. I’m sure they have pretty refined metrics that help gauge the value of all that, but all we have are the numbers they give us, and so far, they aren’t half-bad.

According to Netflix themselves, The Irishman has been viewed in 26.4 million households, with the streamer predicting 40 million households within its first 28 days of release. This means that roughly 16 percent of viewers have supposedly watched at least 70 percent of the feature, though this metric has not been independently verified, and it doesn’t count multiple users using the same account.

While solid, it is still beaten out by Bird Box, which hit around this time last year, and went on to have 45 million viewers in its first seven days. Of course, given the nature of The Irishman, I wouldn’t call that surprising, and I’m sure Netflix is hoping for some real prestige consideration for the Martin Scorsese-directed film.
