The Last Matinee Trailer Has Theatergoers Dealing With a Serial Killer

The Last Matinee

Just when you thought it’s safe to go back to the theaters after the pandemic. In The Last Matinee, a few people in the theater must deal with a serial killer in the audience as he murders them one by one.

The Spanish-language film is a product from Uruguay with director Maxi Contenti (Muneco viviente V, Neptunia) from a script by Manuel Facal (High Five, Fiesta Nibiru) and Contenti. The film stars Luciana Grasso (El Secreto de Julia), Ricardo Islad (El Que No Corre Vuela, Bailiwick), Julieta Spinelli, Franco Duran, and Pedro Duarte.

Here’s the official synopsis of The Last Matinee:

The audience attending the last showing of a horror film in a small downtown cinema is terrorized by a murderer who begins to pick them off, one by one. The only person to notice that something strange is going on is the projectionist’s daughter.

This horror film brings back the vibes from 2008’s Midnight Movie without the supernatural elements. In that American movie, it had a similar plot that someone is murdering people inside the theater one by one. Both movies do reflect the fear for many people in the realization that being at the theater should be a safe place. It’s what made Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho more terrifying at its time because everyone imagines no one ever gets murder in the shower for being at a safe place.

Nonetheless, it’s a slasher film and it looks like a lot of fun. For horror fans, put this on your list to watch over this summer.

Dark Star Pictures and Bloody Disgusting release The Last Matinee in select theaters on August 6. Then it is followed up with VOD, digital, and DVD release on August 24.
