The Lord of the Rings show casting for nudes, surely not? It is likely that the upcoming The Lord of the Rings TV show will be a little darker than the movies. After all, the period in which the show is covering actually deals with some pretty dark themes. However, no one expected Game of Thrones style nudity and violence. That level of adult content doesn’t really fit with Tolkien’s works.
However, fans are now worried because a recent casting call for the show is asking for nude performers and mentioning intimacy guidelines. Check out the Twitter post from TheOneRing.net.

I have to say, I get the concern here. It would in some ways be easy for Amazon to look at the success of Game of Thrones and want to copy it. Whilst that’s fine with the likes of Netflix’s The Witcher, it’s going to seriously annoy fans of Tolkien if the show follows a similarly very adult theme. Sex happened in middle-Earth, of that there is no argument and the show will likely deal a lot with the people of Numenor, who are Human. There is a huge difference though between implied sex and actually showing it on screen. Tolkien’s world is just not the right place for that kind of content, and I would expect some restraint to be shown by Amazon on this matter.

Now, just because there is a casting call for nudes and intimate scenes does not mean that The Lord of the Rings show will be full of sex and violence. However, with the success of Game of Thrones, one does worry that Amazon are going to be controversial on this show? What I would say, is that you don’t spend all those hundreds of millions on The Lord of the Rings IP, just to turn it into Game of Thrones. There are other fantasy properties that Amazon could have gone after if that was the route they wished to take. The one fantasy property you would not take this plunge with is Tolkien in my opinion, as a bit of a Tolkienite myself.
Yes, I do want The Lord of the Rings show to be darker than the movies were, just due to the story being told. I do not however want the ultra-adult level that we had with Game of Thrones.
