The Mandalorian: Dave Filoni Reveals How Long He Has Known Baby Yoda’s Real Name

The most recent episode of The Mandalorian treated viewers to a hefty chunk of information involving Baby Yoda (yeah, while I like the name, I’m still going to call him Baby Yoda, most of the time). First of all, he does have a name, Grogu. And if you ask me, it fits him pretty well.

Also revealed was Grogu’s journey. He was trained at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and was taken to safety by an unknown person during Order 66.  Speaking with Vanity Fair, Dave Filoni, who wrote and directed this latest chapter into the series revealed that the name Grogu has been in place since the first season of the show. You can check out what he had to say below.

“The name has been around for a while. Jon told me early on in Season One what it would be, which made me start to think about how people could learn the name. This gave me the idea that Ahsoka, who is very compassionate, would be able to connect with the child, and that without words they could probably communicate through memories and experiences. Through that connection, she learns the name and then tells Mando and the audience.

As I said above, the name is very fitting. And even though I will be quite stubborn with its use, I think eventually most of us will use Grogu. And a big-time salute to Filoni for coming up with the telepathic relay reveal of the name and backstory, I thought it was great. While much was revealed a few other questions were raised. Who snagged the kid from the Jedi Temple? And how did the two become separated? Which, if any (there better be one), Jedi will respond to Grogu’s Force call?
