The Matrix Cinematographer Talks Why The Sequels Were So Bad

A new The Matrix sequel is in development with Drew Goddard on board as writer/director as revealed by Warner Bros yesterday.

The Matrix is one of the greatest films ever made, hands down. The concept and execution of the first film are immaculate. The two sequels, in my opinion, are absolutely horrible, at least compared to the first film.

Many, including myself, have wondered what exactly happened. The film’s cinematographer Bill Pope, revealed during a recent interview with Yahoo that a book by famed director Stanley Kubrick is somewhat at fault. You can check out what he had to say below.

“Everything that was good about the first experience was not good about the last two. We weren’t free anymore. People were looking at you. There was a lot of pressure. In my heart, I didn’t like them. I felt we should be going in another direction. There was a lot of friction and a lot of personal problems, and it showed up on screen to be honest with you. It was not my most elevated moment, nor was it anyone else’s.”

Pope continued:

“The Wachowskis had read this damn book by Stanley Kubrick that said, ‘Actors don’t do natural performances until you wear them out. So let’s go to take 90! I want to dig Stanley Kubrick up and kill him. There is something about making a shoot that long, 276 shoot days, that is mind numbing and soul numbing and it numbs the movie.”

That’s a shame. Why not follow the old, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” philosophy. I just wasn’t a fan of how the plot moved from a mindf**k sort of thing to a mediocre science-fiction space war. Having said that, with a fourth film in the works the Wachowskis have a unique opportunity to do some retconning. They could say that the two sequels were part of a malfunction in the Matrix and simply erase them. That all depends on what the Wachowskis want to do, they may take offense to my idea.

According to CBM, Pope is not returning for Matrix 4, which is due out in 2022, and is working on Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
