A new The Matrix sequel is in development with Drew Goddard on board as writer/director as revealed by Warner Bros yesterday. This is presumably a Matrix 5 that takes place after the events of The Matrix: Resurrections, however who knows for sure?

As per THR;

‘Warner Bros. is heading back into The Matrix, and this time Drew Goddard is leading the charge. Goddard, the fan-favorite writer-director whose credits include The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods and World War Z, has been tapped to write and direct a new Matrix feature for the studio, Warners announced Wednesday.’

‘This will be the first The Matrix film not to directly involve creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski, though Lana Wachowski will act as an executive producer on the new installment.’

“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” said Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman in a statement. “The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making his new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

“It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life,” said Goddard in a statement. “Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”

As you can see above, the rumor was Goddard was top choice to direct Spider-Man 4. However, if he’s just got this gig, I seriously doubt that is possible any longer.

As for what I think of a new Matrix movie? Meh! I love The Matrix, one of the best films I ever saw at cinema’s with knowing nothing about it. Literally turned up one night with my GF (now wife) back in 99′ at the cinema. We saw the poster and figured why not? I was blown away by how good it was. However, I was less than impressed with both sequels to that movie. Reloaded was all style and no substance and Revolutions was filled with moments no one cared about. The Kid, I mean, really? I felt let down by both sequels. I won’t even mention Resurrections, as it was almost like meta commentary. In fact after finally suffering through it, it is a huge surprise they are going back to this franchise. After all we had one good film out of four so far.

Oh well, let’s hope Goddard can make it two out of five, right?

What do you think as a new The Matrix sequel is in development with Drew Goddard on board as writer/director? Thoughts below as always.
