Why can’t Disney just release The New Mutants on streaming? Read on to find out!

The New Mutants is a real problem child in the comic book movie world. It was originally slated for a 2018 release and has pretty much been pushed back five times since. Early reasons had to do with a lack of studio faith. Slightly later reasons had to do with the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney. More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic is to blame for the film’s delay. Like many people, I’ve been wondering why they can’t just push The New Mutants to one of Disney’s streaming services.

There was only two potential reasons for that, in my mind. Perhaps this movie is so good that Disney actually wants to give it the college try to see if it sticks with an audience. There is also the fact that horror movies are generally really good at reeling in audiences and making their budgets back. Perhaps Disney felt a theatrical release would make recouping the costs that much easier. 

However, if we’re to take the word of writer-director Josh Boone, there’s a much more straightforward reason.

“With most movies, you sign contracts that guarantee a theatrical release, so it needs to open to ever go digital in the first place,” Boone explained to Collider. “We just, too, would like to see people to see it in the theater. But it needs to obviously be at the right time when it’s safe to go back.”

But when will that be? Like the rest of the world, we simply don’t know yet. As of this writing, The New Mutants is set for an August 28 release date. However, even in the Comic-Con @ Home panel video, they poked fun at that date with the subtitle “fingers crossed.” Clearly, it all depends on the safety of the country at the time.

Regardless, it sounds like contract deals are the main reason why Disney is keeping The New Mutants on course for a theatrical release. Here’s still hoping it’s a good flick.
