A couple of years ago, whenever that first teaser trailer for The New Mutants hit the web, one question that popped in the heads of many moviegoers is whether or not it would be an R-rated endeavor. After all, with movies like Logan and Deadpool, 20th Century Fox had proven they are more than willing to go rated R in films that warrant it. But would this actually be the case?
The New Mutants faded into obscurity as 20th Century Fox continually delayed it for reshoots. After its second delay, however, it seemed as though we wouldn’t ever be getting this movie. But with the new trailer just hitting, many were wondering what it would be rated.
As it turns out, director Josh Boone took to Instagram a few days earlier to clarify.
“The movie has always been and will always be PG-13. There was never a plan for an R-rated movie.”

This is especially comforting because based on his statement, an R-rated film wasn’t ever something that crossed his mind. There have been movies in the past where filmmakers shot the thing and then decided in the editing room whether or not they’d go with one rating or another, but in this case, I’m happy to see that it was planned as a PG-13 film from the beginning.
Furthermore, this makes me happy, because some of my favorite horror movies are actually PG-13, as they rely less on gross-out moments or gore and more on atmosphere and concept.
