The New Mutants Not Only DIDN’T Have Reshoots, But They Didn’t Even Have PICKUPS!

The New Mutants had zero reshoots.

When you have a film that’s been delayed as many times as The New Mutants, it’s bound to have rumors. And, man, did The New Mutants, have some crazy rumors. For the longest time, we were hearing that the film would essentially be overhauled at the studio’s behest. From the need to make it even scarier to the need to reshoot half the damn movie, there was no shortage of discussion surrounding the oft-delayed superhero horror flick.

Since then, director Josh Boone has gone on the record to say that no such reshoots actually took place. During a recent press event where LRM Online was in attendance, Boone was asked about those reshoots yet again. And he set the record straight.

“We reshot the movie four or five times, like every scene in it all,” Boone joked. “No, I’m kidding. We never ever did reshoots. We were supposed to do reshoots. People in general, movies do reshoots or pickups, or things like that. But, because of the merger, once it was done, it was done. So, we did, never went back and did reshoots. So, we were always using the same footage and the same material from the start of editing and all the way to the end of it.”

That’s right. Not only did The New Mutants not face extensive reshoots, but it didn’t feature any reshooting of any kind. In most big blockbusters, there is at least a two to three week period where they go back and do reshoots and pickups. Reshoots are just what they sound like, and pickups are scenes or moments that were never shot that need to be added to smooth over the whole experience.

Thanks to the Fox and Disney merger, they were given even less than your standard Hollywood film. With that in mind, I think we can all agree that what we end up with is essentially an untampered-with version of Josh Boone’s vision. At the end of the day, I’m actually even curious how much he wished he could go back and shoot.

Regardless, at least this isn’t an instance where they forced the director our and had someone else come in to reshoot the whole thing, right?
