With us having experienced presentations for both the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5, we have been left with one big question: how much? How much will it take us to dip into this next generation of consoles? What is the tax to we will have to pay to the nations of Sony or Microsoft? All this spec-comparing and library-comparing is great, but price point makes a huge difference.
Yes, there were rumors about places putting PlayStation 5 reservations down at around $700, but we honestly can’t believe that. At the end of the day, it was a placeholder price. Stores always put crazy prices up first so that they can have customers pay a percentage of that price. They also want to make sure customers have an expectation of the price, so it’s in their best interests to overestimate and for customers to be pleasantly surprised. At the end of the day, it’s not like they’re throwing down $700 on day one, so little is lost in overestimating.
But what will the price be? Well, Twitter user Ben Geskin caught a price on Amazon France. On the site, the standard PlayStation 5 was set at €499 and the digital console at €399.

This price point roughly equates to $550 and $450, respectively. However, if history is any indication, Americans will likely see $499 and $399 price points. But how will this compare to the Xbox Series X? That’s the big question.
Well, its price point is less sure, but the rumor sits the Xbox Series X at $400. That’s already pretty cheap, but further rumors peg the unconfirmed Xbox Series S at $200. These consoles would supposedly be considered huge loss-leaders for Microsoft. While Sony seems to working on a more traditional console business strategy, Microsoft is trying out new things. The goal with their consoles will be to let gamers into their ecosystem and into their subscription services.
Again, this is all just rumor, but it does all fall in line with everything we’ve heard in the past.
