The Riddler Actor Says He Was Surprised By Matt Reeves’ Script For The Batman

Pattinson On How Different Tonally The Batman Is And Sequel Teases

Paul Dano, the actor who plays The Riddler says he was surprised by Matt Reeves’ script for The Batman. Read on for more details.

The Batman filming was coming along nicely in my home Nation Scotland until Coronavirus hit. The production on The Batman, like so many other movies was placed on hold, and as yet, has not resumed. However, during the lockdown, The Playlist managed to catch up with actor Paul Dano. Dano is portraying The Riddler in The Batman and it didn’t take long for talk to turn to Matt Reeves’ new movie.

Though Dano cannot say much about The Batman for contractual reasons, he did say how surprised he was by the script. The Riddler himself begins by explaining how weird the shutdown of production was.

“I was filming. I flew home to visit my baby and then didn’t get to fly back to set, because of Coronavirus, which is a really strange thing,” Dano said. “But I feel really good about it. I think Matt Reeves is the real deal. I was really surprised by his script, which I think is, is potentially really powerful. Hopefully we’ll get to get back to it sometime soon? I’m not sure.

What Dano wasn’t aware of during this interview was the very recent news that the U.K. is opening back up for filming. That means there are less stumbling blocks for The Batman resuming production in and around the City of Glasgow.  Dano then goes on to tease something interesting about his character. Though the actor points out he’s not allowed to say any more legally.

“I can’t even legally can’t say anything about it. There’s something fun there in my character and in all the characters. It’s the kind of movie that we’re just desperate to share on the big screen in a big way. So, I hope we all figure this coronavirus situation out and get excited to see a Batman movie. It will be worth it. It’s going to be really cool.”

I can’t wait to see what Matt Reeves has dreamed up for The Batman. I may be more of a Marvel fan than DC, especially when it comes to movies. However, my favorite comic book character was always Batman, and probably always will be. Saying that, I sometimes dislike how other DC fans view Batman. The whole, “Batman will beat anyone, even a God if given prep time” fanboy argument just bores me. I think DC turned Batman into a character who readers understood would never lose a fight to anyone, and that’s not why I fell in love with Batman comics.

Matt Reeves' script for The Batman

What I loved about Batman was the grounded nature of Gotham. Batman’s character intrigues me, because he’s bat-sh** crazy. Suspending disbelief that Bruce Wayne, with no superhuman abilities is so good, works because most of Batman’s Rogues Gallery aren’t overpowered themselves. I guess that’s one of the reasons why I loved Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and didn’t like BvS or Justice League. My feeling is that Matt Reeves will deliver something closer to Nolan than Snyder and that makes me happy as a Batman fan.

What do you think of Dano’s comments that he was surprised by Matt Reeves’ script for The Batman. Leave your thoughts below in the usual spot.
