It’s here! The trailer for the next Shaft film, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Jessie T. Usher, Regina Hall, and Richard Roundtree, was released early Thursday morning. Directed by Tim Story (Think Like A Man, Barbershop), the film is based on a script written by Kenya Barris (Black-ish) and Alex Barnow (The Goldbergs). The film is slated for a June 14th release.
The trailer introduces the audience to tech-savvy John Shaft, Jr., the son of Jackson’s John Shaft II. Needing his help regarding a personal case, Shaft II teams up with his son to get him through the tough streets of Harlem, NY. Hall is introduced midway through as the young Shaft’s mother, which of course will create a bit of conflict for his father. Hall delivers a few well-executed digs at a couple of her ex’s lady friends. As the action and comedy ensue, Roundtree makes his appearance as the patriarchal Shaft, willing to take part in the family action/adventure.

Judging by the trailer alone, the film seems to present a balance of old and new. Roundtree’s presence lends the film its credibility as being a worthy addition to the Shaft franchise, which he also did in the 2000 film. Meanwhile, Usher’s and Hall’s additions bring the story into the present day regarding the birth of his son and his son’s involvement in the cyber world.
Still being early February, audiences will most likely by exposed to a couple more teasers and trailers leading to the film’s June release.
