When it was first announced that the legendary Tom Hanks would be portraying the iconic children’s advocate Fred Rogers in a biopic, many thought the same thing: that is perfect. Now, the world can get a glimpse at Tom Hanks’ performance as Sony has just released the first official trailer for the film A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood. The first few moments Hanks graces the screen in this trailer, it is clear that the veteran performer has done his homework on Mister Rogers.
The film follows a journalist, played by Matthew Rhys (The Americans, The Post), who has been assigned to writing a profile piece on popular children’s television host and advocate Fred Rogers. As he follows Rogers throughout his everyday life, he learns how the man uses positive methods for people to overcome skepticism and cynicism, learning about empathy, kindness, and decency. The film also shows the cultural impact Rogers had on our society, stopped by random families wishing to be in his presence and how Rogers never passed up an opportunity to brighten their day.
From the trailer alone, Hanks is phenomenal embodying Fred Rogers. From his style to his speech to every small movement and facial tick, Hanks studied the man to a T and it clearly shows even in as little as a two-and-a-half-minute trailer. This one already has success written all over it.
The film is directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?, The Diary Of A Teenage Girl), based on a script written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster (Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil), and also stars Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Cooper, Enrico Colantoni, and Tammy Blanchard. A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood is set to hit theaters November 22nd of this year.
