The Star Wars Holiday Special is the second-worst piece of content from the franchise ever released (in my opinion anyway). It is one of the most bizarre entries into any franchise. A new documentary by Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak titled, A Disturbance in the Force, chooses not to focus on how bad the special is, but on the making of it.
Here’s what Coon had to say while speaking with io9.
“Most attention on the Holiday Specialjust focuses on how bad it is and doesn’t go deeper. Our film is not going to be 90 minutes of dumping on it because no one wants to watch that. We’re gone really deep in the research and like an onion. There are a lot more layers as to how the Special happened than you would expect.”
A trailer for the film can be found below.
“Most of the crew are proud not only of the special but of the TV variety genre that so few know about today, so they enjoy reminiscing about it.
This is definitely something I will be checking out. As bad as it is, most Star Wars fans, myself included, try to take in a viewing every once in a while. It will be interesting to see the thought process behind the making of the project and see what went into it, just how it came to be.
More from Jeremy Coon:
“We were also able to find a never before released audio interview with Peter Mayhew talking about the Special along with over 15 hours of audio interviews recorded over twenty years ago with over a dozen people who worked on the Holiday Special. The recordings include others who passed away that we thought we’d never be able to give a voice in the film.”
Many fans love to hate it. And some relish it for being what it is. George Lucas and some members of the cast try their best to avoid discussing it. Personally, I would much rather watch the Holiday Special over The Last Jedi. I truly mean that as it’s much more entertaining and fun.
