The Voice Of Bart Simpson, Nancy Cartwright, On Writing An Episode Of The Show

It’s pretty much common knowledge among fans of the show, and after 30 years, the general public as well. Bart Simpson is and has always been voiced by a woman, Nancy Cartwright. Now, after decades as the voice behind one of televisions most well-known brats, Cartwright is set to write her first episode of the long running series.

In 2017, Cartwright co-wrote an indie film, that was looslely based on her life, that helped propel her to write an episode of The Simpsons. The voice actress recently spoke with Variety, and talked about the experience.

“I never saw myself as a writer on the show, to be honest with you. I wrote a book in 2000, [‘My Life as a 10-Year-Old Boy,’] but that was a memoir. To me, that was so easy to do, because that was my life. It’s not the same thing, with the structure of a three-act sitcom.”

The episode Cartwright helped to, write, will air on March 31 and is titled “Girl’s in the Band”.

The fact that Bart Simpson was voiced by a woman is one of the first bits of television trivia I remember proudly knowing, and while it seems long overdue, it’s nice to see Cartwright try her hand in writing the show that she has had a huge hand in making famous.
