Think Nebula’s Story In The MCU Is Done? Think Again

Nebula has been an interesting character in the MCU. She started out as a character I wasn’t crazy about. The way actor Karen Gillan portrayed her felt odd and over-the-top, even for Guardians of the Galaxy. However, in the second film, she was a character I grew to empathize with more and more. This only continued through her emotional journey in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, where she played a fairly prominent role.

Over the course of the four movies she was in, she went from a bona fide baddie to one of the most emotionally-complex and relatable in the MCU. She is now with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and you’d be forgiven if you thought her arc was over. She literally killed her former self and embraced her role with her sister. Does she have any more growing to do?

“I don’t feel like her story is over at all,” Gillan told Fandom. “If anything, I feel like her story might just be beginning. We found her in a really broken, vulnerable place and over the course of the movies, she’s had to face the source of all of her abuse. She’s just had this huge, cathartic experience and the source of the abuse has been eliminated, so what happens next? That’s something that I think is incredibly interesting. The healing can start but that’s not going to be easy and it’s not going to be immediate either.”

I guess it’s worth remembering that now that she’s been fully reformed, that doesn’t mean she’s perfect. After all, most of our heroes started off in a heroic place before continuing to grow. If there’s anything the MCU is great at, it’s actually giving their characters continuous arcs with each movie.

But how will Gillan approach playing this reformed Nebula?

“First of all, I want to read a lot of psychology essays on people recovering from abuse. And second of all, I can’t wait to kind of channel that into Nebula but also have fun with her at the same time. I feel like we’re really going to start to define who she is without Thanos looming over her.”

There certainly is a lot more territory to be traversed with Nebula’s character. As far as we know, the Guardians of the Galaxy as a whole still have at least one film ahead of them. But beyond that…who knows? James Gunn has always been open about the idea of the cast changing going forward. Given how the MCU never has a status quo for long, it’s great to see them continue to lean into change.
