At CinemaCon this last week Kevin Feige confirmed that the title of Thunderbolts is now Thunderbolts* though never explained why. Speaking to the audience/press at CinemaCon Feige said;

“We won’t talk about the asterisk until after release.”

This is very strange and leave us with several possibilities. The usual leakers have been making some guesses. However, no one is really saying this is what it means yet. I’ll guess because they don’t know. Some suggest it could be a two-part movie and the first one will ultimately be Thunderbolts Part 1. However, that makes no sense. You’d just hide that by not adding the asterisk and making a sequel called Thunderbolts 2. Easy!

Is it possible that the title will be changed prior to release to Dark Avengers? That was a decent theory prior to Feige’s comments. However, “until after release” suggests it will release as Thunderbolts* in theatres. It’s possible the team could become known as Dark Avengers within the movie and a sequel is simply called Dark Avengers. However, again I’d question why that would be teased through the use of an asterisk? Would any of you do that if the plan was to end up calling them Dark Avengers? Where is the marketing reasoning there? I cannot see it myself.

See, none of these guesses from the community, nor leakers really works for me in a logical way. It is of course possible I’m being too logical. Maybe someone on the film suggested a dumb idea to Feige and he just said yes? I mean he did say yes to She-Hulk, so there’s previous moments of insanity in the Marvel boss.

Maybe this is all just designed to get us more interested in Thunderbolts than Marvel felt we were. I have to say I am kind of intrigued. However, I ‘m also predicting a thoroughly unsatisfying reason for this weirdness. I doubt there will be a reason that make ne love this decision within the movie itself. However, we shall see?

What do you think of this weird story as Kevin Feige confirms that the title of Thunderbolts is now Thunderbolts*? Thoughts below as usual.
