WARNING THIS REVIEW INCLUDES SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 EPISODE 2 “ROSE” OF DC UNIVERSE’S TITANS

We are now into the second episode of the second season of DC Universe’s Titans titled ‘Rose’. The series stars Brenton Thwaites (Dick Grayson), Anna Diop (Kory Anders), Teagan Croft (Rachel Roth), Ryan Potter (Garfield Logan), Alan Ritchson (Hank Hall), Minka Kelly (Dawn Granger), Curran Walters (Jason Todd), Conor Leslie (Donna Troy), Joshua Orpin (Connor Kent) and Chelsea Zang (Rose Wilson). This particular episode also guest stars Michael Mosley (Dr. Light), Robbie Jones (Faddei) and Iain Glen (Bruce Wayne). The episode was written by Richard Hatem and was directed by Nathan Hope.

This episode feels like what we should have seen last week for the season premiere was we find all of our young heroes dispersed across the country trying to move on from the events of last week’s episode. It’s now three months after their encounter with Trigon, we find Grayson doing his best to train Garr, Rachel, and Jason. Everything seems to be very low key until they discover a mysterious girl on the run. Grayson being who he is cannot help but get involved to try and help her although she continuously refuses the helping hand because she claims that it would put everyone in danger. Meanwhile, Donna and Kory are working a surveillance mission to try and take down a villain called Shimmer who is played by Hanneke Talbot. Although they seem to be getting along great, they seem discontent with the fact that Grayson has not reached out to them to help train the next wave of Titans. Out in Wyoming trying to stay away from the hero life we find Dawn and Hank, who have settled into what looks like a comfortable farm life. While it would seem that Hank is doing great in this new calm environment away from all of the fighting and constant injuries, Dawn is itching to get back into the hero life. So much so that she begins to sneak out and raids a drug lab.

As we can see they are all doing their best to settle into their new environments, but still seem to have the desire to get back together with the rest of the group. In the last episode, it would seem that we had witnessed the catalyst for this as Jason’s words “the Titans are back b******” seem to have triggered Slade Wilson back into action and retake his persona of Deathstroke. It looks like his first act that we didn’t see but heard was to release Dr. Light from prison and then coordinate attacks against each of both Hawk and Dove and Grayson and Rose. One way or another these characters seem to be destined to get back together.

Johns before the first season had said that Titans would be a slow burn and it has to the benefit of character development. It still puzzles me why they decided to make the season finale of the first season, the season premiere of the second instead. This episode would have fit a lot better as the premiere as it settles us back into what will probably be an exciting second season. I think that the introduction of Rose was handled well as we know that Grayson cannot help himself trying to help out other young people with extraordinary gifts, so much so that he even takes advice from his former mentor. It seems like the Titans have a history with Slade, so it will be interesting to see Grayson’s reaction when he finds out that Rose is his daughter. Will he shelter his new team? Will he try and overprotect Rose? Also, how will the others react to this news, especially if she is to stay with the group?

Titans, although a very dark take on the team that we are used to seeing as an animated series or in comic book form, I think has done a great job at staying true to the characters and that continues in this episode. I can see glimpses of him evolving from that resentful Robin into Nightwing. It will be interesting to see going forward how they introduce characters like Aqualand and Conner Kent as it already seems like the series has a lot of characters they can focus on. As for Deathstroke, the big bad in the series, I would like to see them take a Cartoon Network Teen Titans approach with him pulling all the strings in the background, I think it would make for an intense confrontation and it would give us a chance to maybe see a couple more DC villains. I look forward to watching this story develop and hope that the pace does pick up a little more than last season as we now have a lot more established characters.

FINAL GRADE: A-
