Joker, the by all comic book movie comparisons is a low budget knockout ($55 million), the film has officially passed the billion-dollar mark at the box-office. Director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have made something truly special. Normally, with a hit such as this, a sequel would be a no-brainer, however, that might not be the case with Joker.

Todd Phillips recently spoke with Slash Film, and said while he would be open to making a sequel to his hit film, there are certain stipulations that must be met, you can check out what he had to say below.

“It couldn’t just be this wild and crazy movie about the ‘Clown Prince of Crime.’ It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that this does. Because I think that’s ultimately why the movie connected, it’s what’s going on underneath. So many movies are about the spark, and this is about the powder. If you could capture that again in a real way, that would be interesting.”

Time will tell if we will get another story involving Phoenix’s version of the Joker. I am with Phillips, if there’s something there, another story to be told, let’s do it, but the powers that be should also be careful about making a sequel that would simply be a money grab.
