Todd Phillips Says His Joker Doesn’t Need Anyone Else From The World Of DC

Joker 2 - Did Todd Phillips Just Confirm A Script?

Lots of exciting news from the world of DC today, with Jeffrey Wright and Jonah Hill in talks for the roles of Commissioner Gordon and Joker/Penguin, respectively. Before we are treated to a long-awaited new version of the Dark Knight, we will meet a new and possibly the most unique version of his long-time arch-nemesis, the Joker.

Phillips recently spoke with ComicBook.com and said that his Joker doesn’t need anyone else from the world of DC, and he doesn’t see his Joker having a rivalry with anyone. You can check out what he had to say below.

“This movie just stands on its own. I don’t see that Arthur Fleck fighting anybody.”

To quote Heath Ledger’s Joker when talking to Batman in The Dark Knight, “You, complete, me.” So how will a Joker without Batman work exactly? I’m not really sure, but I’m willing to allow Phillips to show me.

What might turn out to be one of the most arthouse-y type comic book films ever to be made, director and co-writer Todd Phillips’ character study is shaping up to be one for the ages. This, of course, will be in part due to what will likely be a great performance from Joaquin Phoenix.

Joker arrives in theaters next Friday, August 4.
