While Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel series is likely higher on nerds must see list, there is a film coming out about the man who created the world of Middle-Earth, J.R.R. Tolkien.
However, not everyone is onboard with the project, especially Tolkien’s family. You can see what they had to say in a statement to PEOPLE below.
“The family of J.R.R. Tolkien and the Tolkien Estate are aware of the Fox Searchlight motion picture entitled Tolkien that is due for release in May 2019. The family and the Estate wish to make clear that they did not approve of, authorize, or participate in the making of the film. They do not endorse it or its content in any way.”
The family has had several issues with the use of both Tolkien’s work, as well as him being featured as a character in the Steve Hillard novel, Mirkwood: A Novel About JRR Tolkien. His name is synonymous with Middle-Earth/Lord of the Rings and likely always will be, while it may be difficult for the family to deal with this, it’s something they’re going opt have to get used to.
You can check out an official synopsis for the Tolkien below. The film hits theaters May 10.
“Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the ‘fellowship’ apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.”
