It’s no secret that Hollywood has at least contemplated the idea of doing a Back to the Future remake. After all, in this day and age, pretty much nothing is sacred. If it exists and has brand recognition, it’s inevitable that it will re-grace the small or big screen at some point or another. Yes, that goes for Back to the Future too.
In fact, even in fan circles, Tom Holland is a name that has popped up as a solid Marty McFly. Back before Avengers: Endgame’s premise was revealed, some of our staff even contemplated a time-travel escapade with Peter Parker and Doctor Strange in a story that could even mirror the popular Robert Zemeckis flick. Even recently, there was a deepfake featuring Holland and Robert Downey Jr.’s faces on them.
Well, as it turns out, Holland’s potential for a time travel film wasn’t lost on Universal.
“I’d be lying if I said there hadn’t been conversations in the past about doing some sort of remake,” Holland told BBC Radio 1 (via Screen Rant), “but that film is the most perfect film- or one of the most perfect films, one that could never be made better. That said, if [Robert Downey Jr.] and I could just shoot that one scene that they remade for fun – he could pay for it cause he’s got loads of money – I would do it for my fee and we could remake that scene. I think we owe it to deepfake because they did such a good job. … I think I’m gonna speak to Robert and see if we can try to recreate something for deepfake.”

I tell you what…I think they should go ahead and make it. Yes, I know that this isn’t going to happen — Robert Zemeckis has made it clear in the past that he doesn’t want to, but why not? For starters, I’m of the opinion that a remake does not taint the original. The Back to the Future trilogy is a classic and there’s nothing any remake can do to take that away.
And then there’s the talent. I don’t know about Robert Downey Jr., but Holland seriously could make a great Marty McFly. I’m of the belief that if you have a solid filmmaker attached and Holland at the lead that we’re actually setting the film up for success. At the end of the day, you know this thing will get made eventually. Why not do so when you have someone who’s such a good fit?
