Top Gun: Maverick Soars To Record Second Week At The Box Office

According to a variety of sources including THR, Top Gun: Maverick soars to record second week at the box office. After a great opening week, the biggest of star Tom Cruise’s career, the sequel also now has the honor of having the lowest drop in the second week of any $100 million blockbuster. Maverick earned $86 million meaning it has the smallest second week decline (32%) ever for a movie opening to $100 million plus at the box office.

Top Gun: Maverick has earned an estimated $291.6 million through Sunday domestically and $548.6 million globally.  Maverick is holding strong internationally also, with another $81.7 million for a total estimated of $257 million non-domestic box office. Whilst Maverick is already Cruise’s highest grossing movie, (not adjusting for inflation) it’s also even more remarkable when you consider the movie has not, and will not open in Russia or China.

Right now Top Gun: Maverick has air superiority. However next week will see Jurassic World: Dominion launch across the globe. Those dinosaur movies do seem to sell very well among audiences. Even if Maverick gets knocked off top spot by a T-Rex, there can be no denying that the right call was made to delay. Now restrictions are being lifted and things are getting back to normal, Maverick has more than earned it’s costs back. Word of mouth is generally very strong for the sequel. Especially, if you were a fan of the original it seems. I myself have not managed to feel the need for speed, yet. Though I think I’m the only one in LRM towers who hasn’t seen it, and enjoyed it.

The reason for that, is, I was never the biggest Top Gun fan in the 80’s myself. I preferred Iron Eagle, and yes, I know that’s perhaps not a movie which aged quite as well as Top Gun. I’m also not the biggest fan of Tom Cruise as a star, yet I have recently enjoyed all the Mission: Impossible movies. However the main reason is probably because I have two kids with zero interest in the movie, nor any appreciation for the original. I will probably have to wait for the home release of Top Gun: Maverick, but I look forward to seeing it eventually.

What do you think of the box office as Top Gun: Maverick soars to record second week? Did you love Maverick like most fans seem to have? Thoughts below, or on Discord if you haven’t lost that lovin feeling.
