Transformers: The Bumblebee Spinoff Will Take Place Long Before The First Film

We’ve known for some time that the Transformers franchise was going to be changing things up in the future. After the release of Transformers: Age of Extinction, Paramount put together a writers room where a band of high profile writers helped map out the future of the franchise. One film that came of that room was the upcoming Transformers: The Last Knight, but with Michael Bay helming that project, the real turning point we’re looking forward to is the upcoming Bumblebee spinoff film.

Up until now, actual details regarding the Bumblebee flick have been few and far in between. All we’ve heard so far is that Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight would be helming the project, and that Edge of Seventeen star Hailee Steinfeld will be leading the film — which is all great news for a film franchise I have a hard time caring about. But what about the film itself? What other details do we have?

Empire just released a new issue, and in it, they give us our first real details regarding the film, including when it is set (via Dark Horizons).

“Set in the 1980s, it will feature considerably fewer Transformers, concentrating on the big, yellow star (who in the movies so far can only talk via snippets of radio broadcasts) and likely pitching a little younger, tonally.”

So from the sound of it, this film will take place long before Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky stumbled onto Bumblebee in the first film. Between the lower tech time period, the fewer Transformers, and new directing and acting talent, I have to say, they’re well on their way to actually getting me excited to see what this franchise has to offer. I’ve had just about enough metal-scraping action to last a lifetime, and while I expect that on some level, I’d also like to think that they’d change things up so that audiences don’t get tired. While Michael Bay does a great job making the studio money, I think it’s long since been overdue for him to bow out and let someone else inject some new blood into this tired franchise.

The Bumblebee spinoff film hits theaters on June 8, 2018.
