Ubisoft Montreal never realized on Friday the 13th that the video game company will be under siege like a video game.
In a swatting incident, an anonymous called 911 to report an incident at or near Ubisoft Montreal headquarters. The Montreal police are currently investigating the hoax at this time.
Local news outlets reported armed police force entered the building as employees evacuated parts of the building. The situation turned dire as several employees barricaded themselves on top of the roof as there were reports of a hostage situation.
Eric Pope, a senior community manager at Ubisoft, and other employees posted to Twitter as it happened in real-time and marking themselves as safe. Pope’s Tweets are now deleted at this time.
Hours ago, Police Montreal posted to Twitter that “No threat has been identified for now. We are currently evacuating the building. #SPVM”

It is not known specifics on how many employees were on location at Ubisoft Montreal. The company has more than 18,000 employees worldwide. With the current pandemic, it is possible most of the employees are working at home.
The timing couldn’t be any worse. Ubisoft just released its first video game Assassin’s Creed Valhalla tied to the launch of the new PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
Despite the swatting hoax, this is a sick-and-twisted world we’re living in if someone thinks it’s funny to play a practical joke on one of the largest video game companies in the world. Thankfully, no one was injured. There are many instances of swatting that resulted in deaths. It is no laughing matter.
