Universal Developing An Original Film Musical Using Prince’s Music

Over two years since his death, the sounds of “His Royal Badness” are returning to the silver screen.

In what could be in the same essence as 2007’s Across The Universe, Universal Pictures plans to produce an original film musical featuring a number of songs from Prince’s catalog. The film would not be a biopic on the music legend, since insiders have pointed out 1984’s Purple Rain and how the film was both a star-maker and somewhat of a biopic for “The Prince of Funk.” Instead, the original story would simply use Prince’s music to push forward the story.

According to Variety, the Prince estate has been seeking a studio willing to produce such a project. Universal’s Chairman Donna Langley aggressively sought the rights to the proposed film idea. Variety‘s article also described the current status of pre-production on the film:

Meetings have begun with potential writers and producers and execs are hoping the film can be something like Universal’s Mamma Miawith a completely original story where Prince’s music helps drive that narrative.

Prince’s iconic status in the music and entertainment industries is unquestionable. In his career, he won eight Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, a Golden Globe Award, an Academy Award for Purple Rain and sold over 100 million records worldwide. An original film featuring his music to help tell the story, if done correctly, is bound to be a massive success. With all that presented, there’s only one thing to say:

“Oh, no let’s go!”
