Unleashing the Spectacle: Ranking the Mind-Blowing Mission Impossible Movies

Since its inception in 1996, the Mission Impossible film franchise has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide with its high-octane action sequences, mind-bending plots, and the charismatic performance of Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. With seven films released to date, the series has provided plenty of thrilling moments and memorable characters. In this opinion piece, I’ll rank all the Mission Impossible movies, minus Dead Reckoning: Part I which I am seeing later this week, based on their overall quality, entertainment value, and impact on the franchise.

Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018)

Paramount

Without a doubt, “Mission Impossible: Fallout” stands at the top of the list. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, this installment is a masterclass in action filmmaking. The breathtaking stunts, intense suspense, and impeccable pacing make it a standout entry. Tom Cruise’s dedication to performing his own stunts elevates the movie to another level, culminating in the exhilarating helicopter chase sequence. With a complex plot that keeps you guessing until the end, “Fallout” is a true triumph.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015)

“Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation” is a close second. It continues the momentum set by its predecessor, “Ghost Protocol,” and delivers another gripping adventure. The addition of Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust brings a strong female character to the forefront, and the film strikes a perfect balance between action, humor, and espionage. The opera house sequence and the underwater heist are standout set pieces that demonstrate the franchise’s commitment to pushing boundaries.

Mission Impossible III (2006)

Directed by J.J. Abrams, “Mission Impossible III” injects new life into the series after a six-year hiatus. It delves deeper into Ethan Hunt’s personal life and introduces Philip Seymour Hoffman as the menacing antagonist, Owen Davian. The film strikes a good balance between character development and thrilling action set pieces, making it a satisfying addition to the franchise.

Mission Impossible (1996)

The original “Mission Impossible” film directed by Brian De Palma laid the foundation for the series. It introduced us to Ethan Hunt and the IMF team and delivered an engaging plot filled with twists and turns. The iconic scene of Hunt hanging from the ceiling in the CIA headquarters remains one of the most memorable moments in the franchise.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011)

“Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” marks the point where the series fully embraced its high-octane action identity. Directed by Brad Bird, it features some of the most thrilling sequences in the franchise, including the Burj Khalifa climb and the sandstorm chase. While the story may not be as strong as some other entries, the adrenaline-fueled action more than makes up for it.

Mission Impossible II (2000)

“Mission Impossible II” is often considered the weakest link in the series. Directed by John Woo, it leans heavily into the director’s trademark slow-motion action and stylized violence. While it has its entertaining moments and an intense motorcycle chase, the convoluted plot and excessive melodrama make it less memorable than its counterparts.
