Valerie Buhagiar Talks About A Former Tradition In Malta In Carmen | Interview

Valerie Buhagiar brings to screen Carmen, an empowering story about a Maltese tradition with a touch of wit.

The Synopsis

Inspired by true events, Carmen is a charming story set in a village in the Mediterranean island Malta. Carmen (Natascha McElhone, “Solaris”) has looked after her brother, the priest at the local church, since she was sixteen years old. Now almost fifty, she is suddenly left to start a new life. Facing her past, Carmen brings color to the lives of the villagers in this compelling story about a woman finding her voice.

While Valerie Buhagiar studied acting in George Brown College in Toronto she started her career as an actress in the early 80s. She made her debut in Mrs.Soffel. Buhaguar has been seen in other films like Roadkill and Highway 61. Since then she has juggled acting, filmmaking and hosting television. The short film The Passion of Rita Camilleri was her first project as a writer-filmmaker. Then came The Anniversary and It’s Hard To Be Human. Her talent as a filmmaker has come to notice atInternational Film Festivals.

I had the opportunity to speak to Valerie Buhagiar about the back story of Carmen. She opened about her family members that inspired her to write Carmen and how a former Malta tradition had a major influence in households. In addition to having  water scenes in her films and spoke about some of the characters.
