Virtual Crunchyroll Expo Wrapped Up This Weekend with Huge Announcements and More!

V-CRX

Virtual Crunchyroll Expo just happened, here’s what was announced.

Hello, anime fans! This past weekend, Crunchyroll wrapped up their first-ever Virtual Crunchyroll Expo (V-CRX) with a stacked lineup of guests, premieres, panels, performances and more over the three-day digital event. The cosplay show was a lot of fun, and every time I watch a cosplay event, it makes me want to give it a go.

But anyways, Virtual Crunchyroll Expo was a blast to watch and I’m going to cover some of the big premieres and news announced over the weekend. Or if you’d prefer a quick overview, Crunchyroll has put together a highlight video. Check it out below!

Overview

V-CRX featured more than 85 panels and events, 24 hours of anime marathons,  panel discussions, and series available across six languages, 180 artists in the Anime Arts District, and more than 100 exhibitors in the Shopping District. Over the course of the three-day event, there were more than 200 guests, panelists, and hosts across four different virtual stages, with panels available in the V-CRX On Demand area for fans eager to catch up or rewatch the action (That was me).

New Shows and Seasons

Some big programming announcements included Shenmue, a Crunchyroll and Adult Swim Production based on the beloved SEGA video game franchise. It is cool to see Adult Swim working on an anime with Crunchyroll. Hopefully, that means we’ll see more collaborations come to Toonami.

Also, To Your Eternity was announced with an official trailer along with new seasons of Dr. STONE, The Rising of the Shield Hero, How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord: Omega, and the first season of Dr. Ramune -Mysterious Disease Specialist- all coming soon to Crunchyroll. I am most pumped for Dr. STONE. Although Season 2 was already announced for January 2021, it is nice to have the official announcement and trailer finally out there. Check out the trailer below.

Panels

More than 85 panels took place this weekend. These included the creative staff and voice actors behind a mix of series including many of the new Crunchyroll Originals such as Onyx Equinox, Noblesse, The God of High School. Onyx Equinox and Noblesse both look awesome, and we even got a sneak peak of Noblesse. Noblesse is coming to Crunchyroll on October 6 and Onyx Equinox on November 21. Also, The God of High School has been great so far so keep your eyes on these new Crunchyroll Originals. There were also panels for other originals EX-ARM, So I’m a Spider, So What? and TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You, alongside Rent-a-Girlfriend, The Rising of the Shield Hero.

This weekend also gave V-CRX guests a MAPPA gallery tour with behind-the-scenes commentary from creative staff including Sunghoo Park (director The God of High School, JUJUTSU KAISEN). And who could forget the Yuzu’s Cat Cafe featuring a 24/7 livestream of cute and adoptable kittens, as well as a celebrity fan exhibit of anime-inspired art.

Cosplay

And last but not least, the international cosplay competition featured more than 30 participants. The best in show winner was awarded to Jaqueline Fernandes, a cosplayer located in Brazil. The show was hosted by Vampy Bit Me and Mario Bueno, with Rock M. Sakura, Creature Of Habit, GSTQ Fashions, and Kamui Cosplay as judges.

This expo was overall a blast, and I really enjoyed the flexibility of the whole thing. Being able to come back and watch panels later is a luxury not possible for an in-person convention. So, it was great to see Crunchyroll make the most out of this situation and bring us a great, free convention. And the best part is my feet did not hurt the next day.

Next year’s CRX is already set to take place from August 6–8, 2021 in San Jose. So plan ahead, and all kidding aside, let’s all hope in-person conventions will be back by then!
