Wait, Spider-Man: Miles Morales Is NOT An Expansion, In Spite Of Comments From Sony? | LRM’s Barside Buzz

So, what is the new Spider-Man: Miles Morales game? Expansion or standalone?

So, this is a confusing turn of events. Yesterday, Sony unveiled the PlayStation 5. With it, they showed off nearly an hour’s worth of video game footage captured on the system. At the front end of the presentation was a BIG reveal in the form of Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The game looked to be built on the foundation of the hit PS4 Spider-Man game — only it features the one and only Miles Morales. There was much excitement across the web upon its announcement, but then came a statement that nerfed the excitement.

“I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game,” Sony Interactive Entertainment EVP head of European Business Simon Rutter said. “There’s a substantial Miles Morales component – which is the expansion element – but also within the game as well there’s been major enhancements to the game and the game engine, obviously deploying some of the major PS5 technology and features.”

So, not only was this not an actual announcement of a new game, but that point wasn’t made clear at all in that first trailer. Understandably, some gamers felt a bit betrayed. But was Rutter actually correct? Video game journalist Jason Schreier later swooped in with an interesting follow-up.

“Spider-Man Miles Morales is not an expansion or enhancement or remaster, despite a Sony executive’s comments this morning, a source tells Bloomberg News,” he posted on Twitter. “Nor is it Spider-Man 2. It is a brand-new, standalone game similar in scope to Uncharted Lost Legacy.”

For those unfamiliar, Uncharted Lost Legacy is a smaller Uncharted title that took roughly eight or so hours to complete. Rather than going for a full $60, it went for $40. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is meant to take a similar path.

So, is it a full standalone game? Yes. But if you’re expecting a full 40-hour experience, you’ll be disappointed. So, if we’re to believe Schreier, this game won’t ultimately be billed as an expansion, but it will be on the shorter side.
