Microsoft Leaks Unannounced Star Wars Game — Star Wars: Squadrons

UPDATE: EA posted a tweet that teases Star Wars: Squadrons‘ trailer on Monday of next week!

ORIGINAL STORY:

Welcome to the family, Star Wars: Squadrons!

Someone’s messed up. With so many moving parts behind a release of any one title, blunders are inevitable. But I’m sure it’s still much to the annoyance of those up top, who try their best to carefully craft the rollout of details for optimum effect. Oh, well. Their loss is our benefit, and when it has to do with something as big as Star Wars, we’re more than happy to shout from the rooftops. And quite interestingly enough, this leak is a game that had a similar flub earlier in the year.

So, what’s the reveal? Remember in March when an unannounced Star Wars game popped up on the PlayStation Network? It showed up with the banner Star Wars: Project Maverick. Prior to that, a Kotaku report outlined an unexpected game on the horizon. This was a game that would fill a financial hole for Electronic Arts in that it would likely launch near the start of the next generation of consoles.

But what is the game? Bless the leaking gods, because it looks like they’ve struck again with this same game. A new game called Star Wars: Squadrons appeared on the Xbox website, showing off a piece of key art along with the tagline, “pilots wanted.”

According to Venture Beat’s sources, Star Wars: Squadrons will feature aerial space combat. While it will have a single-player campaign, it will have an emphasis on multiplayer. For those who grew up playing games like Rogue Squadron and Rogue Leader, this is likely a great piece of news. After forever, we’ll finally be able to hop into an X-Wing and take on the entire Empire ourselves.

That being said, I’m still not sure whether to be excited. The multiplayer emphasis makes it immediately feel like it was motivated mostly by money. Plus, that initial Kotaku report I mentioned seemed to indicate the game was merely made to fill a financial void, which is never a good sign. I have no proof to back this up, but I get the impression that if there was a game that would be full of cheap loot boxes and predatory schemes from EA, this would be it.

But I hope I’m wrong. Star Wars games are near and dear to many fans’ hearts and I hope this one turns out to be the Rogue Leader sequel they all hoped for.
