The beloved graphic novel, Watchmen, will soon be getting another retelling of the classic story. Damon Lindelof will executive produce the series for HBO and filming is currently underway. While often times we nerds are against remakes and reboots, artist on the original graphic novel, Dave Gibbons, gave Lindelof’s adaptation his blessing while speaking to Deadline at New York Comic Con.
“I think as happens with all works that are around long enough and are successful enough, that people do want to explore things further. As far as this new one, TV clearly is the medium of the moment. It’s where the preeminent and most exciting areas for telling stories of the moment. The fact that Damon Lindleof has found a way to bring Watchmen into that area and do it with something I consider exciting, entertaining and absolutely worthwhile on the subject matter? I think that’s great.”
When retelling a story, it’s always nice to get approval from someone who worked on the original content. Gibbons give Lindelof much praise, which should help to quash any concerns fans may have about the upcoming series possibly tainting the franchise.
With a successful film adaptation coming a decade ago, many fans are hopeful HBO version can continue the level of quality the story deserves. As Gibbons mentioned above, television is the current platform of choice. Because the story isn’t confined to two hours, the showrunners can go much more in depth. That being said, we know this won’t be a strict adaptation and all signs point to it being a modern-day alternate timeline taking place after the events in the graphic novel, so don’t expect a lot of similarities.
