We’ve Barely Scratched The Surface Of Marvel Says Boss Kevin Feige- I’m Less Convinced

According to boss Kevin Feige we've barely scratched the surface of the Marvel universe in the MCU. However, I'm less convinced.

According to boss Kevin Feige we’ve barely scratched the surface of the Marvel universe in the MCU. However, I’m less convinced that is the case. Speaking with Variety, Feige talked about his studio’s success and how that success still surprises him. However, there’s nothing interesting to discuss in that. This comment though, is a different story.

“The great thing about Marvel truly is how many wonderful, interesting characters we have in the comics — they’ve been at it for 85 years. Even after 32 movies, it feels like we’ve barely scratched the surface,” noted Feige.

Now, I’m not so sure that is true. Yes, we can state factually that the MCU has not scratched the surface of characters in the Marvel comics. However I’m not so sure I’d call all of those interesting characters and for me, this is where the MCU problem lies right now.

We also must recall that unlike the comics we actually lose characters from the MCU. This MCU currently has no Iron Man, Captain America or Black Widow and Hulk has barely been used much. Though with Hulk that may change, see the next report up today on LRM. We have replaced those characters rather than added to them and the problem is not all of them are as interesting as those we’ve lost. Iron Man, nor Cap were hugely popular characters from the comics, but the MCU portrayals won over fans and made them S tier. Spider-Man always was and remains the biggest draw at Marvel.

However, whilst we have Strange and Spidey and Captain Marvel, we still don’t have Fantastic Four nor X-Men. Instead Marvel Studios has been trying to replicate their success with the OG Avengers and in some cases it has worked. Shang-Chi for example, or Guardians of the Galaxy. However, not every character introduced has been as universally loved and interest has dropped in Marvel dramatically. There’s also less demand for Marvel rumors than there was 2 years ago folks.

So yeah, in sheer numbers Marvel has barely scratched the surface of the comics. But not all those comic book characters worked. Now we are in a period where not every MCU conversion is working for them. I’m not really sure diluting out old popular characters and replacing them with those from the budget basement is going to maintain the MCU at the level Disney hopes.

Then again, there are rumors Secret Wars will be a soft reboot of the MCU. Perhaps despite what he says Feige is aware the you need the biggest characters all together as often as possible? I guess we will see.

What do you think of Kevin Feige’s comments that we’ve barely scratched the surface of the Marvel universe in the MCU? He’s probably technically correct, but should we be doing any more than scratching for now? Thoughts below as always.
