Spidey fans fears were allayed yesterday when some news appeared about the upcoming What If...?. What If…? WILL feature Spider-Man! Many fans had feared that with Sony owning the rights to Spider-Man and both MCU Spider-Man movies that the wall crawler would be un unusable asset in Marvel Studios What If…? Instead, it seems those fears were unfounded after all, despite there being no hint of Spider-Man in any of the teases we have seen thus far.
In the Summer 2021 issue of Disney’s D23 Magazine obtained by The Direct, Marvel Studios highlighted the upcoming What If…? Disney+ animated series that is set to release in August.
While describing the alternate-reality concept of the series, the issue confirmed that it will be “pulling from” material in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home in addition to other Marvel Cinematic Universe films. That pretty much confirms that Spider-Man is on the table for What If…? It’s been rumored for some time that the last deal we heard about between Disney and Sony has been modified. The reports of that deal were that Marvel Studios would produce one more Tom Holland solo movie and that Marvel would be able to use the character in one more team-up movie.
Far as I can tell an appearance in What If…? would fall outside of that original agreement. Then we have the current Sony Marvel movies and their intriguing connections to the MCU to think about? It’s a weird and flexible situation between Disney and Sony it seems, and I don’t think we know the full extent of the goings on behind the scenes. For now though, fans still have Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU, and the character will appear in What If…? I wonder how they’ve twisted the story of Far From Home for this wacky elseworlds tale? I guess we will start to find out this August?
As a fan, are you happy that What If…? will feature Spider-Man? As always, leave any thoughts below.
