What This Fan Wants From… Marvel’s Spider-Man 3

If you have read this column before you probably know how it works. If not, please be aware that this isn’t a speculation piece for Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. I may well do some speculating, but instead this is more what I as a fan of Spider-Man, would like to see from his next Marvel produced movie.

We currently have no idea what to call the upcoming Spider-Man movie. Therefore, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 does a good enough job of differentiating it from the Raimi Spider-Man 3. But first, I have to talk about the elephant in the room, Sony.

Ignoring Sony Like A Boss

Marvel's Spider-Man 3

The problem with my fan desires is the fact that they might not be possible. Currently, Marvel Studios has a mandate to produce one more Spider-Man movie within the MCU. Spidey himself will also be available for one more team-up movie, though we don’t know what that movie is.

Frankly, since this is about fan service, I’m just going to pretend the Sony problem doesn’t exist. As a fan, it seems like a better business decision for Sony to expand the deal with Disney for Spider-Man. Why not sign a new deal giving Marvel creative control for an extended period? Marvel gets to do what they want with the Spider-Man characters, but Sony pays for movies lead by their characters. Sony would get the usual 75% of profits for their own movies. But, I know it’s not as easy as that in reality.

For the purposes of what this fan wants to see though, I’ll explore the future of Spider-Man without those realistic limitations.

Tone Down The Tony

Marvel's Spider-Man 3

I’ll start by saying I enjoyed both Homecoming, and Far From Home, far more than I did any of Sony’s movies. However, I feel like Spider-Man 3 needs to start to move away from the MCU safety blanket used in both movies. Of course, I mean that both previous MCU Spider-Man movies have relied heavily on Tony Stark.

For me, the third movie needs to allow Peter Parker to stand on his own two feet. So I’m hoping for a Spider-Man 3 that allows Peter to mature into his own hero. There will still be a Stark connection going forward with Peter, because he had access to all Tony’s tech. But I’m looking for a story that pits Peter Parker against an enemy using pretty much his own skills and abilities.

An appearance from Happy, especially given his relationship with Aunt May seems certain. However, given that the world has been told who Spider-Man is, I’d prefer to see Peter forcibly cut off from his support group. Peter being on the run, maybe from authorities, and certainly from villains, makes a more interesting story dynamic. I also have one big NEED for something in Spider-Man 3.

New York, New York!

Marvel's Spider-Man 3

After spending two movies away from Manhattan, I loved the ending to Far From Home. When Peter is swinging through Manhattan with MJ, it really feels like he’s come home. I, therefore, want to see Peter in the playground best suited to his power set, the Big Apple. There’s just something so iconic about Spider-Man and Manhattan island. When we think of Spider-Man we think of him flying through streets at crazy heights. Spidey using the buildings to zip around away from the rest of the population is iconic to the character. It’s like Batman and night-time rooftops.

Marvel has been building Spider-Man slowly. First, as a kid doing his best. Then envying the fame of the Avengers, only to shun the honor. But Spider-Man has now helped save the Universe, died, and come back five years later. He then takes on the responsibilities of an adult when all he really wants is to be a teenager having fun. He’s ready to be on his own, without needing a Tony Stark or Nick Fury to guide him. To me, that means Peter in New York, dealing with a threat that he cannot get help with.

So here is what I would like to see from Spider-Man 3 and the character going forward. When it comes to a villain, then I think there are two very strong choices. Both Kraven the Hunter (the fan-favorite choice) or Scorpion would work for me, so why not both?

Mac Gargan now knows who Spider-Man is now. What if he gets recruited by J. Jonah Jameson to go after the now criminal Spider-Man in a new powered suit? That’s kinda how the comics origin of the Scorpion character began, and it would fit with the ending to Far From Home. Gargan would be willing I’ll bet to go after Peter’s family and friends just to get to him.

To add another spoke on the wheel, why not have Kraven hired to do the same? But by a different benefactor. Frankly, I think it’s time to introduce the Osborn’s, and what better way than to have Osborn hire Kraven. I don’t really see Kraven as an out and out villain, that’s why I think a three-way battle could work. Kraven would eventually realize that Parker was a hero and innocent of the crimes he’s been accused of. Gargan wouldn’t care, he just wants revenge. If the Scorpion suit malfunctions and traps him in a new form, then he could be out to kill Jameson as well as Spider-Man.

I’m imagining a cat and mouse three-way chase across the rooftops and streets of NYC. By the end of the movie, I feel like Marvel has to find a way for Peter to ‘prove’ he isn’t Spider-Man. I could see Kraven wearing Spidey’s suit, while Peter Parker appears next to him on TV. Maybe Kraven’s super-strength would allow him to convince the press he was the real Spider-Man? This would then throw Osborn off in the wrong direction, away from Parker. Yet, perhaps bringing Parker and the Osborns together in some way?

Building Up To The Classic Villains

Marvel's Spider-Man 3

Assuming Marvel could then chart a course for Spider-Man, it would be cool to build-up to the likes of Sinister Six. Which could then lead to Dr. Octopus, and eventually, a Green Goblin. I know Goblin especially has been done too much already. However, never well for me, when the first Spider-Man movie came out, I was dumbfounded that they started with Goblin. Of all Spidey’s enemies, and how they come about, Goblin should never be first. Goblin needs to be built up over time for the character to work.

The dynamic between Spider-Man and Goblin is thus. Spidey knows Norman Osborn is not an evil man, but a sick man and his friend’s father. Goblin, when in that form, despises Spider-Man on a personal level and knows he is Peter Parker. Osborn doesn’t ever remember when he’s not Goblining out that Peter = Spider-Man. That’s what works between them, and that relationship takes time to build.

I’d build Dr. Octopus up in a similar way, but earlier. Have him as a scientist who leads the Sinister Six for Osborn, and be turned into Doc Ock by accident. I’m talking about weaving the threads of the narrative across several Spider-Man movies until we get the inevitable clash with Green Goblin. Years down the line, after Peter has become a full adult in the MCU.

Wrap it up, Fanboy

The problem with all this, of course, remains Sony. Marvel simply cannot plan an arc like this until there’s some sort of guarantee that Sony won’t just take it all away. Sony seems to want Spider-Man in their VenomVerse eventually. Yuch

If it was up to me, I’d scrap that in a heartbeat. The Venom character could’ve been built up as enemy for even farther down the line than Goblin, in an ideal world. But, the character is just tainted for me now. Marvel Studios could do great things with the Venom storyline one day. That tosh Sony has put out, just stinks the character up for me. I haven’t watched Venom, I have read the script though, before the movie even came out. It’s not for me, the absence of Spider-Man in Venom’s origin is unforgivable to this fan.

So this may be what this fan wants from Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, but it’s not what I think we will get. Sadly.
