What This Fan Wants From…Thor: Love And Thunder AND Captain Marvel 2

This week what I want as a fan from both Thor: Love and Thunder AND Captain Marvel 2. Seems like too much, but is there a method to the madness?

Welcome back to another week of random ramblings from me. If you have not read this column before, it’s simple. I look ahead to something coming out that we know very little about. Then, I say what kinda sh** I’d like to see happen. You with me? Then let’s get to it, shall we?

Why Two Movies?

Thor: Love and Thunder and Captain Marvel 2

The reason I am covering two movies still quite some time away is because I’m not getting into as many specifics this week. I want to talk about the cosmic side of the MCU we heard so much about from Kevin Feige a few years ago. So what I as a fan want to see from Thor: Love and Thunder and Captain Marvel 2, is plenty of space, and not much planet Earth.

Every Marvel movie before Guardians of the Galaxy was centered on Earth in some way. Even Thor who lived in Asgard, only seemed to have adventures on Earth, and as a result, Asgard felt underdeveloped. Even Captain Marvel, which began in space, spent most of the time back on Earth. Now, I’m not saying that was a mistake in Captain Marvel. They had to ground Carol to Earth after all.

What I am saying is that audiences will accept it when Thor or Carol Danvers are saving some other planet, or system. It doesn’t always have to be Earth that’s at risk. For evidence, all we need to do is look at both Guardians movies and Thor: Ragnarok — great movies, that didn’t need Earth. So what could happen in both movies that would keep me happy? Well, I’ll start with the one I have no fears at all on, Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor: Love And Thunder

Thor: Love and Thunder and Captain Marvel 2

The reason I say I have no fears for this movie is because it’s a sequel to Thor: Ragnarok. Ragnarok is the movie that proved to me that Thor is better in space than on Earth. A realization that for me, was backed up in Avengers: Infinity War. Also, Thor: Love and Thunder is once again directed by Taiki Waititi, and we know the Guardians of the Galaxy will show up, or some of them will.

As for the plot, the rumored villain is Dario Agger, played by Christian Bale. We know Bale is the villain, but the character remains a rumor for now. Agger is known more commonly in the comics as The Minotaur, and the CEO of Roxxon Energy Corporation. Roxxon signs have been seen before and Loki actor Tom Hiddlestone appeared in some images with Roxxon logos recently. I seems very likely that the events of Loki will have an impact on Thor: Love and Thunder. Agger is also commonly recognized as an antagonist for Jane Foster, and we know Jane is back big time in Love and Thunder.

So wait, if Agger is a CEO on Earth, and Jane is on Earth, how are they going to go cosmic? Well, they’re going to use Space Sharks of course, silly. Whilst I think Earth will definitely be in Love and Thunder, I don’t think the movie will spend a great deal of time there. Waititi has talked about finding out more about Korg’s people, and how Love and Thunder makes Ragnarok look safe. He also told us to expect Space Sharks, and adding all this up tells me that the majority of the movie will be in the cosmos.

One of Thor’s abilities we as fans probably have forgotten is being able to travel almost anywhere. Thor’s use of Stormbreaker to summon the Bifrost has only been used once in Infinity War so far. There was no situation where Thor would have used this in Endgame. Plus, in Endgame Thor wasn’t exactly in his best frame of mind.

However, I think by the time of Love and Thunder, Thor is going to have recovered somewhat. after all, they won in the end, and although people were lost, Thor will find out this was the only possible way they could have won. Here’s hoping that realization will remove some of the guilt Thor had bagged up. Can we then expect Thor to be able to hop between worlds in the way he could do in the comics? I suppose this is one of the reasons I feel like Thor is just beginning as a character in the MCU.

Captain Marvel 2

Thor: Love and Thunder and Captain Marvel 2

I feel like the final act of Captain Marvel was a little too short. I want to see more of a fully powered up Carol Danvers dealing with threats appropriate to her power level. For this fan, that means Carol flying through space having battles against an armada of warships. The end of Captain Marvel, and her entrance in Endgame make it seems like this is exactly what Carol has been doing for the last 20 years.

However, I do not want another prequel story in Captain Marvel 2. I think a contemporary story that leans into some of Carol’s backstory in the cosmos is the way to go. Carol could have friends, successes, and failures to deal with in her years as the galaxy’s hero. Carol is going to be a major player in the Avengers going forward, and this will be the times when a threat is big enough to need Carol back home. I would prefer to see Captain Marvel solo movies deal with her fight in the cosmos.

For a start, I feel like all the Marvel movies so far have skirted around the Kree. I could see Danvers being their nemesis, or specifically that of the Supreme Intelligence that Carol resisted. We know that Nick Fury is currently somewhere in space with the Skrulls, where did they go? Are the Skrulls still at war with the Kree? Did the Skrulls ever find a new homeworld? What kind of ways have the Kree attempted to defend against Danver’s OP abilities?

I want to see Monica, Fury, Talos, etc, but I want to see them out in the cosmos more than I want to see them at home. The absence of Thanos in the last few years must have had an effect on the Galaxy at large, not to mention the events of the blip itself. There is an opportunity in both Thor: Love and Thunder and Captain Marvel 2, to expand on the Galactic worldbuilding. That opportunity should be taken with both hands in this fan’s opinion.

Wrap It Up, Fanboy

As always, this is just my own thoughts and my own tastes. We know very little about Thor: Love and Thunder, and almost nothing about Captain Marvel 2. This week is more of a plea to Marvel, to take the set-ups they have and run with it. Audiences do not need a connection to Earth in the MCU now, Marvel has educated that audience, and the seeds have been sown. Harvest those fruits and let’s get into some really Galactic crazy sh** please Marvel.

What do you think of my mad ramblings, are you with me on the cosmic side? What do you want to see from Thor: Love and Thunder and Captain Marvel 2? Leave your thoughts below as always.
