Will Stormlight Archive Book 4 Hit In 2020? Brandon Sanderson Gives Another Update

It’s only been two years since Oathbringer hit bookstores, and while it may have been a 1,300-page doorstopper of a novel, fans quickly made their way through the third book in the Stormlight Archive series, again resetting the clock of how long we’d have to wait ’til the next one. Luckily, when it comes to author Brandon Sanderson, fans have never really had to wait too long for updates, as he keeps them well-informed through his various channels online.

Not too long ago, he updated to that he was about two-thirds through the first draft of the fourth book in the series, and just a couple of days ago, he took to Reddit to update fans.

As of this writing, he has fully finished outlining book four and has also written 75% of the first draft.

“Right now, Parts One and Two of the book are done as well. Parts Three-Five have been finished for everything but the main, core viewpoint cluster. (So, if you’ve been following along, that means viewpoint clusters two and three are finished.) I’ve also done some work on the interludes, getting a nice chunk of those done, most notably the “through line” viewpoint for the Interludes.

“Remaining to do are a handful of interludes and the core story for the second half of the book. Together, that should be around 100k words, though it’s possible I’ll go longer.”

Now, here’s the big question: can he make publication in 2020? That depends on the next month-and-a-half. In order to hit a 2020 publication date, he needs to finish the draft by January 1. That means he has at least 100k words to put out by then, and between the two holidays, that’s quite the prospect indeed.

That being said, Sanderson has always been a consistent beast, and if he maintains his standard 2,500 words every day, he may very well make it. The big plus here is that at about 75% through the book, he generally knows if a novel will need major rewrites, and with him being this far in already, he doesn’t think that’ll be the case.

So, can he make it? For my money, I’d say there’s a good chance, but you never know, considering how much of a wrench holidays can throw into the mix. If it were any other author, I’d be hesitant, but Sanderson’s consistency makes it all sound possible.
