If you’re a fan of musicals and you just want to sit down to a delight of a movie, you really can’t go wrong with The Greatest Showman. Yes, the plot and structure of the movie are about as trite as it gets, and its connection to reality is about as far as a film “based on a true story” can get. But, ultimately the catchy tunes and strong performances were about enough for me to give the film an enthusiastic pass.
And I know I wasn’t the only one. The film went on to gross $434.9 million worldwide, and while in the world of superhero movies that may seem like a bit of a disappointment, in the context of an $84 million original musical, that’s pretty damn good. The film made boatloads of money for Fox and really justified Hugh Jackman putting himself out there for the passion project.

Now, on the heels of its success, the film’s director Michael Gracey revealed to The Sun that he and leading man Hugh Jackman are laying the groundwork for the inevitable sequel.
“When a movie becomes as big a success as this, it’s only natural there is demand for a sequel. So those discussions have started and we are working on one right now.”
At this point, it’s unclear what the follow-up film will chronicle. Things ended pretty definitively in the original one, not leaving a whole lot of breathing room for more story to tell — unless they really want to change things up following the last scene in the film and go back on his growth.
Also likely to return are the songwriting team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who also did work on La La Land. Jackman’s co-stars are up in the air in terms of their involvement.
