X | Ti West On His Thoughts On ‘Elevated Horror’ And On The Making Of X And The Upcoming Pearl [Exclusive]

This week was the release of the Blu-ray and DVD of the A24 horror film, X. This film was written and directed by Ti West. He shot the prequel to this film, titled Pearl at the same time. The premise of the film is that an adult film crew ventures into the countryside where they rent a guesthouse on the property of a senior couple. It takes place in the late seventies when adult films were not quite what they have evolved to be. The group quickly finds out the hard way that not everything is what it seems and that there is more to this elderly couple.

While at its surface X may just seem like your typical horror slasher film, West does a fabulous job at storytelling. There are a lot of themes that include one’s age, the pursuit and conservation of presumed beauty, and being comfortable with your sexuality. Nothing is forced and is allowed to blossom at its appropriate time. Now you add some thrills, suspense, and chills and you have yourself a great film.

X

While X was not able to be shot in the 16mm style that West wanted due to the pandemic, he found ways to at least get the look. One that brings us classic horror vibes like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Adding to that aesthetic is the farmhouse county setting that alone for horror fans screams danger.
