Yes, The Time Travel In Avengers: Endgame DOES Make Sense

We’ve had many a discussion of Avengers: Endgame on our Slack channel for LRM Online. While there are plenty of things we all loved about the flick, one hot, contested topic has been that of time travel. While most of it seemed to make sense based on the logic set up in the movie, by its end, I was convinced that it didn’t really make sense. And you know what? I was totally okay with that. For a movie that managed to hit all the right notes emotionally, I was willing to see it being done at the expense of the logic.

But that actually doesn’t appear to be the case. After discussing the logic behind all this and reading a new piece from Forbes, I think I have a handle of how the time travel works. Okay, so let’s dive into the basics of the whole thing.

Using the logic of the time travel in the film, when you go back and change an even in time, you don’t alter the future, you create a branching alternate present that eventually leads to a completely different future. So as the Avengers interfered with the events, their future remained unaltered. This is why when Nebula kills young Nebula, she doesn’t poof from existence. The only reason they needed to go back in time was the snag the Stones from their respective time periods, and the only reason they wanted to put them back was so they wouldn’t upset the balance the Stones create.

But then there’s one little wrinkle. At the end, when Cap goes back in time to place the Stones back, doesn’t return and is found later sitting on a bench, having lived a happy life. To me, this seemed to be a contradiction, as Captain America ultimately went to an alternate timeline. The second he made a move that changed the present, he created a new one, so there’d be no way he’d end up on that bench on the timeline he already lives in, right?

Well, here’s how that could make sense. In the film, they establish that they can use the handheld Quantum devices to go back in time, and the special platform is only needed to end up back in the future. That means that Cap could have lived a full life with Peggy Carter and lived past the point he knew everyone was at the funeral at…and then he traveled back in time to that very branch in time at that very spot.

Now, the only question is whether or not Cap can return to the other time period he created with Peggy…though maybe going back isn’t really important to him at this point, as Peggy will have passed away recently.

So what do you think? Does it make sense? Let us know your thoughts down below!
