Zachary Levi Had Doubts On Being Cast As Shazam Due To The Rock Already Set To Play Black Adam

After the big shake up at DC Studios, Zachary Levi gives an update on his DCU status going forward.

Last year’s Shazam! was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. The much lighter-toned DC film showed us the studio did have a different side to them, that wasn’t so dark, and wasn’t so gritty. Zachary Levi was great in the superhero version of Big, but the actor wasn’t always so sure he would get the part.

This was due to The Rock already being given the role of Shazam’s nemesis, Black Adam, and Levi thinking about how the two characters look very similar. The actor recently spoke with Nerdbot, and talked about his doubts on landing the role of Shazam, you can check it out below.

“Per the comic books, Black Adam and Captain Marvel – my true namesake – they’re yin and yang to one another. They are identical. It’s actually why I didn’t think I even had a chance of getting this job. He was already cast as Black Adam, I knew enough to know that Captain Marvel/Shazam and Black Adam were basically doppelgängers, just with a slightly different color scheme and haircut. I was like, ‘No one’s gonna hire me to be The Rock’s twin, don’t think this is going to work out.'”

More from Levi:

“Thank God I was wrong. Black Adam is from the Captain Marvel/Shazam part of the DC universe, so I hope [they meet]. I think that would be awesome to be able to go and do that.”

I too am glad Levi was incorrect, as the film was, in my opinion, the most well balanced DC film in years, excluding Joker, and those two aren’t even really comparable if you ask me. I’m not too concerned with the two characters being doppelgangers.

Levi won over fans with his portrayal of the character, and we’ve all been waiting for some time now to see Dwayne Johnson to put on a cape of some sort. It’s not clear as of now if Johnson will appear in the upcoming sequel, but I anxiously await seeing these two on-screen and predict high levels of comedic chemistry from them.

A sequel to the film titled, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, has hopes for shooting to start sometime around the first of next year
