Zack Snyder’s Army Of The Dead Will Get Prequel Film And Anime Series

Army of the Dead to get prequel film and anime spinoff.

With all the hype around Zack Snyder’s Justice League, you’d be forgiven for forgetting he has another film in the can. I’m talking about Netflix’s Army of the Dead. This is a zombie action heist flick that won’t hit until next year, but Netflix is actually making a pretty smart move here.

According to Deadline the streamer has greenlit two adjacent projects. The first is a prequel feature film and the second is a spinoff anime series. Obviously, since the first film hasn’t been released yet, it’s hard to speculate on what these projects can be about. Given that Army of the Dead takes place in the aftermath of a zombie outbreak, so who knows when the prequel film could take place.

Regardless, we know that Army of the Dead star Matthias Schweighöfer will helm the project.

“I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to partner with Netflix again as we expand the Army of the Dead universe with both an international prequel, as well as exploring the visually dynamic world of animation,” Snyder said. “It’s been a great collaboration and we are thrilled that Netflix sees this as big of an IP as we do.”

“It has already been a great pleasure to be part of this wonderful ensemble around Zack Snyder – a fascinating project. I am happy that it is now being developed on so many different levels,” added Schweighöfer.

As far as the anime series, we already know who it will follow. It will be titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, and will serve as an origin story for Dave Bautista’s Scott and his “rescue crew during the initial fall of Vegas as they confront the mysterious source of the zombie outbreak.”

The anime series will be showrun by Jay Oliva of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Snyder himself will direct two episodes of the series.

Honestly, I think this is all great news. If there is one mammoth weakness Netflix has is its absence of branded content. By acting quickly with Army of the Dead, they can potentially change that. If it’s a huge hit, they’ll be able to capitalize on it quickly and strike while the iron’s hot.
