Deadline is reporting that Columbia Pictures and Blumhouse Productions have chosen actress/writer/director Zoe Lister-Jones to write and direct the reboot for the 1996 cult classic The Craft. The news comes after a number of fan sites proposed the idea and spread rumors that the deal was happening.
Before starring in the ABC hit comedy series Life In Pieces alongside Colin Hanks, James Brolin, Dianne Wiest, and Angelique Cabral, Lister-Jones has a history of filmmaking on her résumé. She wrote/executive produced/starred in Lola Versus, co-wrote/produced/starred in Breaking Upwards, and wrote and directed Band Aid—the latter which premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. Just recently, her comedy pilot Women Up was greenlit by ABC. The series will be executive produced by Lister-Jones under her production company, Ms. Lister Films.

The original film—starring Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Rachel True and Neve Campbell—followed a new student at a Catholic prep high school who befriends an outcasted trio that practices witchcraft. The film opened the door for witch-themed and female-empowering films and television shows like Practical Magic and Charmed. Now, with #MeToo and Time’s Up, having an outspoken voice in both movements at the helm seems like an aligning of the stars for this reimagining.
No word yet on when the film is due to be released. Columbia and Blumhouse are co-financing the film.
