Sandra Bullock and her team of intelligent, cunning and stylish thieves stole the weekend box office as Ocean’s 8 opened at number 1. Domestically, the film raked in over $41.5 million, well ahead of its nearest contender, Solo: A Star Wars Story, which made just over $15 million in its third weekend out. Including the international market, Ocean’s 8 starts off with a worldwide total of over $53 million, putting it very close to its $70 million production budget at the beginning of its run.
Ocean’s 8 is a spin-off of the previous “Ocean’s” trilogy, which was helmed by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts and Andy Garcia. Steven Soderbergh, the director of the three films, served as producer for this one. In this film, Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, the ex-con sister of Clooney’s Danny Ocean who decides to gather an all-female crew to perform an impossible heist at the yearly Met Gala held in New York City. Joining Bullock are the likes of Cate Blanchett (Thor: Ragnarok, Blue Jasmine) Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises, Les Misérables) Mindy Kaling (The Office, The Mindy Project), Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story, The Post), Awkwafina (Storks, Neighbors 2), Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter (the Harry Potter franchise, Fight Club). Ocean’s 8 was directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Free State Of Jones).
