Finally, Simon Barrett makes his full-length feature directorial debut with Séance.

The veteran horror film writer worked alongside many of the genre’s famed directors, including Adam Wingard, Ti West, Joe Swanberg, LC Holt, and Lane Hughes.

Now, Barrett can shine his own light with his first movie.

RLJE Films and Shudder streaming network acquired the North American rights to Séance. The film plans for release in theaters, On Demand, digital, and on Shudder’s streaming platform on May 21. Also, Shudder acquired the rights for release in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

The film stars Suki Waterhouse (Assassination Nation, The Divergent Series: Insurgent), Madisen Beaty (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Ella-Rae Smith (Into the Badlands, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), Inanna Sarkis (Boo 2! A Madea Halloween), Seamus Patterson (Channel Zero), and Marina Stephenson-Kerr (Channel Zero).

Here’s the brief synopsis:

In Séance, Camille Meadows (Waterhouse) is the new girl at the prestigious Edelvine Academy for Girls. Soon after her arrival, six girls invite her to join them in a late-night ritual, calling forth the spirit of a dead former student who reportedly haunts their halls. But before morning, one of the girls is dead, leaving the others wondering what they may have awakened.

Barrett wrote the screenplays on many horror films, including You’re Next, Blair Witch reboot, and The Guest. Also, he wrote a few segments in the horror cult anthology series of V/H/S, V/H/S 2, and The ABC’s of Death.

His last foray into directing was with V/H/S 2’s segment titled Tape 49. Previously he directed shorts, including The Screenwriter Diaries and The Nothing Deal.

For the horror cult enthusiasts, this is an anticipated effort to witness Simon Barrett’s transition into the director’s chair for once. Although he has collaborated with some of the greatest cult horror directors, it’s about time he established his own position in the cult horror genre.
