Ahsoka Episode 4 Review – Your Smoke Theory Sucks

Dave Filoni comments on the possibility of recasting Baylan Skoll due to the tragic passing of actor Ray Stevenson for the first time.

No that’s not a typo, and yes we are saying SPOILER FREE, so here is my Ahsoka Episode 4 review. Honestly, I had a lot of fun watching this one. Very much an action packed episode, with plenty of Lightsaber combat. The premise is kinda what you’d have guessed after Episode 3.

Last week I predicted Ahsoka was being set up to be brought low, so she can rise back up. Exactly how this is all framed together would be spoilers, so not going into details. However, for the most part this works despite being wholly unoriginal in it’s implementation. That’s just a hard fact folks, there’s nothing really original here you haven’t seen before, probably in Star Wars itself. So, the main question is, does that make it boring?

Fun?

No, this is not a boring episode despite the fact the writing was on the wall as they say. This is the kinda episode which on paper is a bit of a simple script, but lives or dies by how it’s put together. Thankfully director Peter Ramsay did a great job for the most part. I liked the Lightsaber combat, including the subtle differences between the fights. Master’s fighting vs Padawan’s fighting are two very different beasts.

What works here is Ray Stevenson’s Baylon. He exudes an understated threat and ruthlessness, but not hate, and with a measure of wisdom. I really hope we get a little more of how he ended up like this. So sad that no matter what happens in Ahsoka, we won’t get more Baylon after Ray’s tragic passing recently. Star Wars villains can at times be a little mustache twirling for my tastes, Baylon is far from that.

Outside of Stevenson, there isn’t really much I can point to performance wise. It’s all about the action this week, so let’s discuss that. I really like the samurai influence on these Lightsaber duels, especially the main conflict. That Sabine fights like a Mando straight out of sister show Mandalorian and it is effective is cool. Huyang gets in a fight and that was unexpected and quite fun as well. Though, I’m slightly disappointed we are 4 episodes in and Chopper hasn’t killed anyone yet. Surely it’s coming?

However, I guess given the internet speculation, this shows main talking point will be Marrok. Have you heard all the crazy theories, that he’s really Ezra? Or, that he’s Starkiller from the video games, and more? Well, the fact someone wears a mask doesn’t always mean their identity is being hidden for a reason. I won’t say any more but don’t get your hopes up for some big reveal. If anyone is disappointed by this, I’m not sure why? No expectations were set by the show, they were set by some guys smoking weed and posting their ideas on the web.

Listen, I like an action episode here and there. However, without any true drama, the best part of this episode was the simple dialogue between Baylon and Ahsoka. However, It’s never the kind of episode that’s going to blow me away as a critic. My guess is that all that drama will be saved up for Episode 5.

We record The Cantina Reviews later this evening (for me) and it should be up a couple hours later. If you didn’t catch what we thought of last week’s episode, the link is Here. This week we are doing away with the spoiler free section and going straight to discussing spoilers, there will be a warning.

GRADE: B

Solid, well put together, fun, but action focused and a plot you’ve seen a million times before.
